ONTARIO: Foreskin more sensitive to touch - study: headlines wrong

Cutting destroys foreskin sensitivity

by Hugh Young
The foreskin is more sensitive to touch than other sites on the penis, a study at Queens University, Ontario, has found.

It further implicitly found that the foreskin is infinitely more sensitive than its absence.
But that is not what the headlines would have you believe. Quite the reverse.

Psychology student Jennifer Bossio, her tutor Caroline Pukall and urologist Stephen S. Steele studied the sensitivity of the penises of 62 men, 32 intact and 30 cut. The men, aged 18 to 37, were excluded if they had sexual dysfunction. (Thus it was impossible to establish whether cutting has any effect on sexual dysfunction.)

The men were asked about their sexual functioning in five areas: erectile function, intercourse satisfaction, orgasmic function, sexual desire, and overall satisfaction. Genital cutting is likely to impact on ability to withhold orgasm until ready, pleasurable sensations during intercourse and before orgasm, and the quality of those sensations . The cut men of course could only rate their own satisfaction, not compare it with anyone else's.

The researchers measured touch sensitivity, touch pain threshhold, warmth detection and heat pain threshhold on four sites, two on the shaft, one on the glans and one on the outside of the foreskin, if any. (They also made the same measurements at a point on the forearm as a control.)

It is not clear why heat pain was studied. Few couples use painful heat as part of their lovemaking. (The notion that pain is an integral part of sex may be an artifact of male genital cutting.)

They established that the outside of the foreskin is no less sensitive to  the pain of pricking, to warmth, or to heat pain than the other sites of the penis (or to the site on the forearm). Thus its removal can only negatively impact on sexual sensation, just as the removal of the rest would. But they express this finding as a lack of  greater sensitivity, thereby stacking the deck.

They confirmed the finding of Sorrells et al. that "the foreskin was the most sensitive to tactile sensation stimuli." They comment that "given the high prevalence of fine-touch pressure receptors (Meissner corpuscles) in the preputial mucosa, this finding was not unexpected" and thereafter ignore it.

None of the many reports of this study picked up on this strange omission. Instead, under headings like:

- they promoted a finding quite the reverse of what the study actually established.

These misleading headlines and more have been collected by Circwatch.

The study has been thoroughly rebutted in the Huffington Post by Brian D. Earp

Innovus Pharma Announces Start of Its CIRCUMserum(TM) Commercial Phase in Morocco With Initial Order of 10,000 Units by Its Partner Ovation Pharma

LA JOLLA, Calif., Dec 27, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE via COMTEX) -- Innovus Pharmaceuticals, Inc., ("Innovus Pharma" or the "Company" [Is this a press release or a legal contract?]) www.innovuspharma.com INNV 0.00% announced today that its topical treatment for reduced penile sensitivity, CIRCUMserum(TM), has received importation and commercialization approval from the Moroccan Ministry of Health. In addition, the Company announced that its partner Ovation Pharma SARL ("Ovation Pharma") placed its first order for 10,000 units of CIRCUMserum(TM) ... Ovation Pharma may pay Innovus Pharma up to approximately $11.25 million ...

Bassam Damaj, President and Chief Executive Officer of Innovus Pharma commented, "We are very excited ... "

About CIRCUMserum and Reduced Penile Sensitivity
CIRCUMserum(TM) is a proprietary daily-use topical cream specifically designed for circumcised men. CIRCUMserum(TM) is a blend of essential botanical oils and other FDA-GRAS ("generally recognized as safe") ingredients and is intended to be part of a [circumcised] man's daily grooming regimen. [Intact men may not use the product, suggesting it would weaken or harm the intact mucosa.] CIRCUMserum(TM) works by making the skin more sensitive with the continuous use of the product ...

Reduced Penile Sensitivity ("RPS") results from a gradual loss of penile sensitivity over time. As a person ages, the dulling effect can increase. RPS can happen at any age and its prevalence is consistent across all ages. According to the CIA world fact book, over 98 percent of Moroccan men are circumcised, representing a group of approximately 15 million individuals. Recent medical studies identify a correlation between circumcision and reduced sensation. The British Journal of Urology International reports that circumcised men can experience up to a 75 percent reduction in sensitivity compared to men who are not circumcised. In a user survey conducted by Centric Research Institute, 75 percent of circumcised participants reported an increase in sensation and greater sexual satisfaction after regular use of the product and 80 percent reported feeling results after just 14 days of using CIRCUMserum(TM). [So much for studies claiming that circumcised men's sex could not be any better....]

...

[This, like surgical foreskin restoration, is reminiscent of Dr Seuss's "The Sneetches" Like Dr Monkey MacBean, they propose to make money both by circumcising, and by reversing its effects. The existence of CIRCUMserum(TM) raises the question, if it needs to be undone, why do it?]

ZIMBABWE: Hookers charge circumcised men more: "They take longer"

Harare circumcised men forced to pay US$30 extra

UNAIDS and the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended circumcision as an important new element of HIV Prevention.

As such, local health authorities have since embarked on a massive campaign encouraging men to get circumcised. The campaign has seen prominent musicians like Winky D and high profile politicians such as Mines Minister Orbert Mpofu being circumcised too.

Scientific trials have shown that male circumcision can reduce a man's risk of becoming infected with HIV during sexual intercourse by up to 60% hence the call for this campaign dubbed 'Pinda MuSmart'.

[Yet more circumcised Zimbabwean men have HIV than non-circumcised - just as they did before the circumcision campaign began:

However, despite the health and hygienic advantages of circumcision, it has since been established that circumcision also BOOSTS revenue for a large quota of prostitutes. In a random survey conducted by this publication, siphoning information from sex workers, circumcised men pay more for sex. Revelations made by hookers operating around the Avenues, Harare's unrivalled red light district, show that prices for sex vary depending on the potential client's "circumcision status".

Their argument was that since the process of circumcision involved the removal of foreskin which contains sensory nerve receptors, that diminishes the man's sensitivity thereby increasing the period of sex sessions. An increase in time in the sex session, they argued, meant a loss of other potential clients in that period because they thrive on 'pushing volumes'.

"You see the problem with circumcised clients is they take too long to complete a single round. I might risk losing revenue from other clients and waste time on one guy for the same price, so we therefore push our charges upwards if one is circumcised," said a self proclaimed prostitute. [So it hardly "BOOSTS" their revenue, just brings it back up to par.]

Several other sex workers corroborated with her stating that there is a slight increase of US$20 to about US$30 if their client is circumcised. [So that's only $10 more.]

[Clearly the prostitutes don't believe circumcision protects them from HIV. Much more important is whether they accept sex without condoms.]

ENCINITAS, CALIFORNIA: Moisturising cream for circumcised men (implying harm)

New personal care product for circumcised men

By
Centric Research Institute today launched CIRCUMserum™, the first personal care product formulated specifically for use by circumcised men. CIRCUMserum is a daily moisturizing cream made from a patent-pending blend of essential botanical oils designed to condition areas of the penis dulled by the constant exposure resulting from circumcision.

Over 79 percent of American men aged 18 - 80 are circumcised, representing a group of approximately 90 million individuals. Recent medical studies identify a correlation between circumcision and reduced sensation. The International Journal of Men's Health published results of a study that showed circumcised men are 4.5 times more likely to experience erectile dysfunction due to loss of sensitivity. In a further study, The British Journal of Urology International reports that circumcised men can experience up to a 75 percent reduction in sensitivity compared to men who are not circumcised.

Softer Skin Promotes Feelings of Sensation and Sexual Performance
As with other types of skin, the glans (head of the penis) can suffer callousing that results in "Dullness Syndrome" (DS) from years of exposure and buildup of keratin (protein) layers. Urologists report that patients with DS due to circumcision experience diminished feelings of sensation and sexual satisfaction. CIRCUMserum was developed to address DS through regular moisturizing application, restoring the glans to a softer, more natural state that may enhance feelings of sensation.

"We're addressing an important but not frequently discussed aspect of the sexual satisfaction of American men," said Dr. James L. Yeager, Chief Technical Officer of Centric Research Institute. "Most of us are circumcised. A decline in sensitivity can impact sexual satisfaction. CIRCUMserum provides a natural, easy to use option and course of action for men to bring back some of the intensity they may have lost in their sex lives."

In a user survey conducted by Centric Research Institute, 75 percent of circumcised participants reported an increase in sensation and greater sexual satisfaction after regular use of the product. Eighty percent (80%) reported feeling results after just 14 days using CIRCUMserum in its recommended daily dose.

[This product gives the lie to the claim that "circumcising does not affect sexual function" but Centric Research Institute may also be compared to Dr Seuss's McMonkey McBean who made money from Sneeches by fitting them with, or removing, their belly-stars.]
